Introduction to Harvesting Electrical Energy from Road
- The global energy demand is increasing day by day.
- Today fossil sources account for 80% of energy demand.
- Coal (25%), natural gas (21%), petroleum (34%) and nuclear (6.5%).
- Only 0.4% of global energy demand is met by hydro, solar and wind.
- A 500 megawatt coal-fired power plant produces approximately 3 million tons/year of CO2..
- This results in rise in global temperature leading to Global Warming.
- Also the coal availability is depleting.
- It is necessary to look for alternative source which doesn't affect environment.
Objective of Harvesting Electrical Energy from Road Traffic (HEERT)
- The UNO is urges to generate electrical power with reduced depletion of natural reserves.
- Our project deals with the generation of electrical power from momentary load from traffic.
- Because of increase in the usage of vehicles by individuals, the traffic conjunction is unavoidable.
Working principle of Harvesting Electrical Energy from Road
- Vehicle passes over the oil bed, and a high pressure on the oil bed proportional to the weight of the vehicle is created.
- The oil flow towards the one sided inlet valve to reach the hydraulic motor.
- The hydraulic motor coupled with DC generator converts the rotary torque developed into electrical energy.
Systems used in Harvesting Electrical Energy from Road Traffic (HEERT)
- Active Oil Injection System (AOIS) for heavy vehicle i.e. weight greater than 1 tone
- Passive Oil Suction system (POSS) for light vehicle i.e. weight greater than 1 tone.
Active Oil Injection System (AOIS) in Harvesting Electrical Energy from Road Traffic (HEERT)
- Auxiliary bed has about 30% of main bed oil.
- It pressurizes the oil from the hydraulic motor towards main bed.
- Hydraulic cylinders-connected between auxiliary bed and main oil bed’s storage line.
- Active Oil Injection System (AOIS)
Use of Auxillary bed in Harvesting Electrical Energy from Road Traffic
Hydraulic Cylinder in harvesting electrical energy from road traffic
Passive Oil Suction system (POSS)
- POSS system has only the main bed.
- The main bed consists of elastomers.
- Elastomers has maximum load resistance and excellent impact factor.
- After the oil bed is compressed elastomers will expand to its original size. And create a vacuum which leads to the suction of oil from oil storage line.
Hydraulic motor
- Converts hydraulic pressure and flow into torque and angular displacement (rotation).
- Motor selection depends on the available average load of the vehicle.
- Minimum possible pressure output will be100 kg/cm2
- Minimum pressure required to rotate hydraulic motor is 72.2 kg/cm2
DC Generator
- Converts rotating torque into electrical energy.
- We choose DC generator since pressure will not be continuous in practical case.
- We use 36 volt DC Generator with the current rating of 26.7A
Advantages of Hydraulic Cylinder harvesting electrical energy
- Eco-friendly
- During heavy traffic, we can generate a maximum of 500W. For one day it can generate minimum of 10KW.
- No separate land area should be alloted for erecting our HEERT.
- Can be used to lighten the road side.
- Independent on renewable and non-renewable source.
Conclusion
- Generates more power than solar system with same cost.
- By making proper surveying and by implementing this project in right areas this project will definitely enlighten the roads of our country.
